EARLY ON IN THE DIRT WORK PHASE OF THE PROJECT, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE PLANNED UNDERCUTTING OPERATION WAS NOT GOING TO BE ADEQUATE. EXCAVATIONS WERE GOING AS DEEP AS TEN FEET BEFORE HITTING ANYTHING REMOTELY SOLID. THE WETTEST SPRING AND EARLY SUMMER ON RECORD IN SOUTHERN SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES CERTAINLY DIDN'T HELP THE MATTERS AND MADE THE CONDITIONS WORSE THAN ANTICIPATED. AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO UNDERCUTTING A TRIAXIAL GEOGRID WITH 12 INCH LAYER OF GRAVEL WAS CONSIDERED TO BRIDGE THE POOR SOILS. THE TEST SECTION WAS PREPARED AS SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS. THE FIRST PHOTO IS A TEST SECTION AFTER BEING GRADED OUT, AND ACTUALLY IT DOESN'T LOOK THAT BAD. BUT AS THE BULLDOZER WAS SPREADING OUT THE DIRT, YOU COULD JUST SEE THE AREA IN FRONT BY THE TRACKS JUST WAVING OUT LIKE LIKE A WATER BED. THE BAD AREAS HAD A CONSISTENCY OF PLAY-DOH AND COULD NOT BE COMPACTED. THE SECOND PHOTO SHOWS THE GRID MATERIAL WITH THE GRAVEL BEING SPREAD, AND THE THIRD PHOTO IS THE FINISHED TEST SECTION. AFTER LETTING THAT FINISHED SECTION SET FOR 24 HOURS, THE AREA WAS TEST ROLLED WITH A LOADED DUMP TRUCK AND IT FAILED. AFTER THAT FAILURE, THE CEI TEAM CONSIDERED A SECOND TEST, THIS TIME WITH TWO LAYERS OF THE GEOGRID MATERIAL WITH 18IN OF GRAVEL, BUT DECIDED AGAINST IT WHEN A QUICK COST EXCUSE ME, A QUICK COST ESTIMATE DETERMINED IT WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY A $3.4 MILLION ADD TO THE CONTRACT. ANOTHER OPTION THAT WAS CONSIDERED WAS THE INSTALLATION OF A THREE FOOT LAYER, THREE FOOT LAYER OF RIPRAP WITH A SIX INCH GRAVEL LAYER ON TOP OF THAT. THE COST ESTIMATE FOR THAT OPTION WAS APPROXIMATELY 5.1 MILLION, SO IT WAS QUICKLY RULED OUT AS AN OPTION. HYDRATED LIME TREATMENT WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE BEST [00:45:06] SOLUTION AND MOST COST EFFECTIVE FOR THE POOR SOILS. CHEMICALLY DRYING THE SOILS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY MIXING LIME IN WITH THE WET SOILS TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WATER IN THE SOIL BY EXPANSION OR HYDRATION OF THE LIME, THE LIME EXPANDS AND FORCES OUT THE EXTRA WATER THAT'S IN THE SOIL. THESE PHOTOS SHOW THE LIME OPERATION FROM PLACEMENT TO MIXING TO FINAL COMPACTION. ON AVERAGE, APPROXIMATELY THREE FEET OF SOIL IS EXCAVATED. THEN THE LIME IS MIXED WITH THAT EXCAVATED MATERIAL. THEN IT IS REPLACED IN ONE FOOT LIFTS, COMPACTING AFTER EACH ONE FOOT LIFT PROOF ROLLS OF EVERY AREA ON THE JOB THAT HAS BEEN LIME TREATED HAVE PASSED WITH NO PROBLEMS.
